The 2550 series "Hokuto" limited express train features distinctive high-decker Green Cars capable of operating at 130 km/h.
"This is the highlight"POINT: The Kiha 182's roof exhaust pipes were originally round, but a new, later-type roof with square exhaust pipes has been created. Additionally, the early-type end face with the louvers positioned on the gangway frame has also been newly designed. This allows for the creation of both early and late-type models, with the early-type being used for the unreserved seating cars in the basic set.

◆Vehicle Guide
The KiHa 183 series is a Japanese National Railways (JNR) limited express diesel railcar that debuted in 1979 as a successor to the KiHa 82 series, which was used in Hokkaido.
The KiHa 183 series 500 series, which was added in 1986 in preparation for the privatization of Japanese National Railways (JNR), underwent a major model change. Along with an improved running system, it featured through-type leading cars designed for splitting and merging, a sleek body with continuous windows, and a paint scheme of white with red and orange stripes, different from the conventional JNR limited express livery. After the privatization, the 550 series also appeared, designed from the outset to operate at a maximum speed of 120 km/h.
The KiHa 183 series underwent modifications and repainting to suit each operating line, resulting in a wide variety of models, so much so that it was commonly referred to as the "KiHa 183 series swamp."
The limited express "Hokuto" between Hakodate and Sapporo underwent interior and exterior modifications in 1994 to coincide with the introduction of the KiHa 281 series "Super Hokuto." The exterior was changed to the HET color scheme, which is based on the KiHa 281 series but features a light gray base with blue and green stripes, also known as Funka Bay Blue.
- Among the HET-colored KiHa 183 series trains used for the "Hokuto" service, there are 2550 series trains based on the 550 series with reinforced brakes. Due to differences in brake pressure, these trains cannot be mixed with other KiHa 183 series trains, but they are used on the "Hokuto" service which operates at a maximum speed of 130 km/h, resulting in a reduction in travel time between Hakodate and Sapporo using the KiHa 183 series.
