Actual vehicle introduction
The E217 series is a commuter train that debuted on the Yokosuka and Sobu lines in 1994. At the time, it attracted attention as the first commuter train to adopt four doors on each side.
The first 15-car, two-train set was a prototype vehicle known as a pre-production model. It differed slightly from the group that began mass production in 1995, particularly in its front design, and became popular as a result.
Starting in 2007, equipment upgrade work was carried out, and along with this, the color design was also changed, altering the exterior appearance from the previous dark blue and cream to a lighter blue and cream.
Starting in 2020, the trains were replaced by the successor E235 series, and the replacement is scheduled to be completed in 2024. As a result, the Y101 train set had its livery changed back to the revival color scheme from before the update.
The vehicle was retired after an event in May 2025.

- Headlights, taillights, and front display are equipped with a constant lighting circuit board and an ON/OFF switch.
- The front display illuminates in a color close to white thanks to the use of a color prism.
- JR mark, car number, train set number, and front logo are pre-printed.
- Both leading cars are equipped with TN couplers (SP) on the driver's cab side.
