The W201 model, which was introduced in 1982 as Mercedes-Benz's first D-segment car, was marketed under the name 190 series.
In the 1988 minor redesign, all models were fitted with protective panels called "Sacco plates" on the sides of the body, improving aerodynamic performance.
Furthermore, official imports to Japan began in 1985, and depending on the engine displacement, it could be classified as a 5-number vehicle (a Japanese vehicle classification for cars with a small license plate).
