◆Vehicle Guide
The Kumoha 40 series was a double-ended electric train that debuted in 1932 and was the first 20-meter-long electric train in the Ministry of Railways.
Initially, these trains were active on the Chuo Line, Yamanote Line, Joban Line, and Joto Line (part of the current Osaka Loop Line). After the war, most were converted to single-cab or intermediate cars, but those that remained with double cabs were used to add cars to trains on the Chuo-Sobu Line and other lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and some were further moved to local lines such as the Toyama Port Line, Oito Line, Ube Line, and Onoda Line.
On the Ome Line, older electric trains were used until 1978, and the Kumoha 40 series, along with the 72 and 73 series, remained in service until the very end.
- In the 1960s, the older electric trains on the Ome Line mainly consisted of two-car formations of KuMoHa + KuHa, or two of these coupled together. However, from around 1972, MoHa 72 and SaHa 78 cars were transferred in, and thereafter, four-car formations of KuMoHa 73 + SaHa 78 + MoHa 72 + KuHa 79 became the main type of train.
