The 100 Series Shinkansen debuted in 1985 (Showa 60) during the JNR (Japanese National Railways) era as the successor to the 0 Series Shinkansen. Its sharp, pointed front end was called a "shark nose," and its sleek appearance made it a new face for the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen lines. It was the first Shinkansen to adopt double-decker cars, and featured significantly improved comfort with the inclusion of Green Cars and dining cars. From 2000, it was modified to replace the 0 Series "Kodama" on the Sanyo Shinkansen line, resulting in shorter 4-car and 6-car formations. Some formations were repainted in a "fresh green" livery, similar to the 0 Series, featuring a gray base with green and dark gray stripes, reminiscent of the "Rail Star." Commercial operation of the fresh green formations ended in November 2011, while the JNR-colored (white with blue lines) formations retired after a farewell run on March 16, 2012.
