This series was introduced to replace nine sets of 10 series trains that have been in operation since the Karasuma subway line opened.
The exterior and interior designs were decided by a vote of Kyoto citizens and users, and unlike the conventional 10 series, the design has a more futuristic image with the use of many curved surfaces in the front shape.
Currently, in addition to the Karasuma subway line, the line also runs via the Kintetsu Kyoto line to Nara Station on the Nara line.
